17th century monk reading a Bible at a desk in his cell. A quill pen and ink and hourglass on the table, a human skull on the window sill, crucifixion scene on the wall.

Made by David Deuchar after own design.

Medium: Copperplate engraving on wove (vellin) paper.

Sheet size: 19.3 x 23.2 cm (7.6 x 9.13 inch). Image size: 11.3 x 13.5 cm. (4.45 x 5.31 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: David Deuchar (1743-1808) was a goldsmith, seal engraver, and an amateur etcher. Born in Angus, Scotland, he followed in his father Alexander’s footsteps, who was originally a farmer but became a lapidary in Edinburgh. David Deuchar gained renown as a seal engraver and was one of the first to recognize the talent of the future portrait painter, Henry Raeburn.
