Antique print, titled: ‘Le Medecin Clair-Voyant’, (‘The clairvoyant / clear seeing doctor’) Scene in a medical laboratory, with various instruments and apparatus strewn about. There are numerous bottles on a table, an open book in the foreground, and a fish hanging from the ceiling. On the left an assistant mixes medicine with a mortar and pestle. At the centre of the scene is seated an old bearded physician (who is supposedly clairvoyant) – he points at the heart of a young female patient who stands in front of him. This original antique master print was published by Helman in France in 1775. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: Made by Helman after Le Prince. Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-1806/1809), was a French draughtsman, engraver and printseller. He was born in Lille in 1743 where he received his early artistic training. His death date is uncertain. He died in Paris in either 1806 or in 1809. In Paris he studied with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783), a draughtsman, engraver and etcher, and was one of his finest pupils. Helman was known especially for his engravings of genre scenes. Jean Baptist Le Prince (1734-1781) came from Metz and studied with Boucher in Paris. He stayed in St. Ptersburg between 1758 and 1763. After returning to France he etched many Russian scenes. Le Prince is also considered to be the inventor of the aquatint.
