Description
This view captures an expansive pastoral scene. In the immediate foreground, two figures are seen from behind, one carrying a tool, perhaps a staff or hoe, as they stand on a rocky outcrop shaded by trees. The middle ground features a series of fields, dotted with trees and small structures, leading to a river that winds through the landscape.

Biography engraver: Matthaus Merian der altere (or “Matthew”, “the Elder”, or “Sr.”; 1593-1650) was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt, Germany for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house. He was a member of the patrician Basel Merian family.
