BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Source: unknown, to be determined.

Biography engraver: Jean-Claude Richard de Saint-Non (1727-1791) was a French painter and printmaker. He was born, and also died, in Paris. He is often rather misleadingly known as the “Abbe de Saint-Non”; although intended for the church by his family, he never took more than minor orders. He was a pioneer of the aquatint technique in printmaking.

Biography artist: Jean-Honor? Fragonard (1732-1806) was a French painter and printmaker whose late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. One of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien R?gime, Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings (not counting drawings and etchings), of which only five are dated. Among his most popular works are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism.
