BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published as part of the Houghton Gallery by John Boydell, London, 1778.

Biography engraver: James Watson (c. 1740-1790) was an Irish mezzotint engraver active in London. Renowned for his refined technique and portraits after both contemporary and Old Master artists.

Biography artist: Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish Baroque painter celebrated for his dynamic compositions and portraits. George Farington (1752-1788) was a British draughtsman who provided drawings for Boydell’s projects.
