‘JOOST VAN DEN VONDEL.”

– Interior scene showing the celebrated Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel seated in his modest bookshop. Vondel is portrayed writing at a small desk while holding a sheet of paper, turning toward the viewer. Shelves behind him contain parcels, books, and papers, suggesting the daily activity of a bookseller’s shop. At the counter a customer is depicted in conversation. The scene emphasizes both Vondel’s literary life and his humble profession as a bookseller in Amsterdam. The print was drawn by W.F. Hoevenaar and printed by P.W. van de Weijer in Utrecht around the mid-nineteenth century and delicately hand-colored.
