Description
This print is a roundel depicting a scene of classical allegory. Three putti, or cherubic children often used in art to symbolize innocence and the divine, are shown engaging with one another in a peaceful, natural setting. The putti appear to be in conversation, with one holding what looks to be a tablet or book, perhaps sharing knowledge or a story. To the left, one putto is partially draped in a cloth and seems to be listening intently, while the one on the right has wings, indicating that it may represent a figure of love or an angelic being. Below the roundel, the inscription “INNOCENCE taught by LOVE & [F]RIENDSHIP” indicates the theme of the piece. The scene likely represents the purity and virtue of innocence being guided and nurtured by the forces of love and friendship, which is a common theme in neoclassical art that harkens back to ancient Greco-Roman ideals. It embodies the Enlightenment values of learning, virtue, and the importance of affectionate relationships in the development of character.
