‘LOWER LEFT: “R. NANTEUIL AD VIVUM FACIEBAT.” LOWER RIGHT: “ET EXCUD. CUM PRIVIL. REGIS. 1652.” COAT OF ARMS BENEATH PORTRAIT.’

– Fine engraved portrait of Henri II, Duc de Nemours shown half-length and facing slightly to the left. He wears clerical dress with a broad collar and a cross suspended from a chain. The portrait is enclosed within an elegant oval frame and beneath it appears a coat of arms. Henri II of Savoy-Nemours (1625–1659) was initially destined for an ecclesiastical career and served as Archbishop of Reims before renouncing the clerical life to inherit the titles and estates of his family. After the death of his brother in 1652 he became Duke of Nemours, Geneva, and Aumale.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 26 x 34 cm (10.24 x 13.39 inch). Image size: 22 x 27 cm. (8.66 x 10.63 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, soiling and creases. Trimmed, as common. Remains of paper tape on rear from previous attachment. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Biography engraver: Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678) was a celebrated French portrait engraver and draughtsman, active in Paris. He was known for his finely detailed and lifelike engravings, particularly of French nobility and clergy. Appointed official portrait engraver to Louis XIV in 1657.
