– Oval engraved portrait of Henri II d’Orléans, Duc de Longueville, shown half-length and facing slightly to the viewer’s right. He wears armor and a sash with an elegant lace collar, his long curled hair and moustache reflecting aristocratic fashion of mid-seventeenth-century France. The portrait is set within an oval frame and rests on a pedestal containing a French laudatory verse celebrating his character and achievements. Henri II d’Orléans, Duc de Longueville (1595–1663), was a prominent French nobleman, governor, and military leader who played an important role in the political life of France during the seventeenth century.

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, soiling and creases. Trimmed, as common. Remains of paper tape on rear from previous attachment. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Biography engraver: Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678) was a celebrated French portrait engraver and draughtsman, active in Paris. He was known for his finely detailed and lifelike engravings, particularly of French nobility and clergy. Appointed official portrait engraver to Louis XIV in 1657.
