BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published by Gillis Hendricx in Antwerp for the series Icones Principum Virorum Doctorum, Pictorum Chalcographorum Statuariorum nec non Amatorum Pictoriae Artis numero centum (1645–1646).

State: Fine impression; later publisher’s state.

Biography engraver: Paul Pontius (1603–1658) was a Flemish engraver from Antwerp and among the most accomplished reproductive printmakers of the Baroque era. Closely associated with Rubens and Van Dyck, he engraved many celebrated portraits for Van Dyck’s Iconographie, admired for their rich tonal depth and technical brilliance.

Biography artist: Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was a Flemish Baroque painter and print designer internationally renowned for his portraits. His Iconographie series of engraved portraits of artists, scholars, and nobles became one of the most influential portrait publications of 17th-century Europe.
