– Half-length portrait of the German jurist Gottfried Daniel Hoffmann shown within a stone architectural niche. The sitter wears a wig and academic coat and holds a book and quill pen, symbols of his scholarly profession. A heraldic coat of arms appears beneath the frame above the inscription panel. Gottfried Daniel Hoffmann (19 February 1719, Tubingen – 1780) was a German jurist and professor of public and feudal law at the University of Tubingen. Educated at the same university, he became an influential legal scholar and served as councillor to the Duke of Wurttemberg. Hoffmann held the title of Comes Palatinus Caesareus and belonged to several learned societies, including those of Jena and Leipzig. His academic career reflects the important role of university jurists in the legal and administrative culture of the German states during the Enlightenment.

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.
