– Bust-length portrait of General Pichegru in uniform, turned slightly to his left, within an oval frame. This scarce original antique print depicts a portrait of Jean-Charles Pichegru (1761-l 1804), a distinguished French general of the Revolutionary Wars.

Medium: Mezzotint on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 35 x 48 cm (13.78 x 18.9 inch). Image size: 30.5 x 42.2 cm. (12.01 x 16.61 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Slight creasing at corners. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The original painting was made from life (‘ad vivum’) by Charles Howard Hodges himself, who often created both the painting and the print.

Reference: Rijksmuseum, RP-P-1906-1749; Feltz 699-1(2).

Biography engraver: Charles Howard Hodges (1764?1837) was a British mezzotint engraver and painter who worked primarily in the Netherlands. He was known for his refined portrait engravings of political and military figures.
