BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was published in ‘Variae Architecturae Formae’ (1636) by Jan and Lucas Van Doetecum, two brothers from Hollstein.

Reference: Met museum 2012.136.571.

Biography engraver: Johannes van Doetecum I (Netherlandish, 1528/32?1605).

Biography artist: Hans Vredeman de Vries (Leeuwarden 1527?1606 (?) Antwerp (?)), was a Dutch architect, painter and engraver. He extensively wrote on garden design (1538) ornaments (1565) and perspective (1604) of which he became an international authority. After his studies on Vitruvius and Serlio, de Vries became Antwerp city architect and fortification engineer.
