BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in Paris by Martin de Monchy; illustration to Honoré d’Urfé’s L’Astrée.

Biography engraver: Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736–1807) was a French engraver, draughtsman and illustrator celebrated for his refined Rococo style book illustrations and reproductive prints. Charles François Adrien Macret (1749–1783) was a French engraver active in Paris, known for reproductive engravings after leading eighteenth-century French artists.

Biography artist: Charles Nicolas Cochin fils (1715–1790) was a prominent French draughtsman, engraver and art critic who worked extensively for the French court and contributed to the dissemination of Rococo and Neoclassical imagery.
