BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From a five-part series of the Senses, published in Augsburg.

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver and mezzotintist from Augsburg. He specialized in portraits and allegorical scenes, often working in collaboration with publishers in Germany and France. His series of the Five Senses became a popular decorative subject throughout the 18th century.
