Biography engraver: John Smith (1652?1743) was one of the most important English mezzotint engravers and publishers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He helped popularize the mezzotint technique in Britain, producing portraits and genre scenes after leading European artists.
Biography artist: Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder (c. 1634-1704) was a Dutch genre painter known for his humorous depictions of tavern and domestic life. His works often show exaggerated characters and moralizing undertones, continuing the tradition of Adriaen van Ostade.
