BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Original antique master print published by Le Bas, in c. 1745. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Le Bas after a painting by Teniers.

Biography engraver: Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) was a French engraver. He was engraver to the Cabinet du Roi and produced numerous engravings after paintings. In total he produced around 500 works.

Biography artist: David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp. He was the son of David Teniers the Elder, while his son and grandson also became painters. He was a wildly prolific painter, creating over 900 works. During his life he started the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after having presided over the Antwerp guild of painters.
