– Full-length portrait of Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, in ceremonial robes, holding the coronet of an earl in his right hand and a sword at his side. Shown standing in a classical interior with ornate urn and heraldic symbols. An important British patron of letters and a prominent book collector, Harley was instrumental in assembling what later became the core of the British Library’s Harleian Collection.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in London, 1745 (after a painting dated 1728).

Biography engraver: George Vertue FSA (1684-1756) was an English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period.

Biography artist: Michael Dahl (1659-1743) was a Swedish portrait painter who lived and worked in England most of his career and died there. He was one of the most internationally known Swedish painters of his time. He painted portraits of many aristocrats and some members of royal families, such as Anne, Queen of Great Britain, Prince George of Denmark and the exiled Christina, Queen of Sweden.
