Description

Medium: Etching on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 18 x 10 cm (7.09 x 3.94 inch). Image size: 17 x 9 cm. (6.69 x 3.54 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Light foxing, soiling and creasing. Some staining. Remains of tape from attachment. Plate losely attached to carrier sheet (hand laid paper). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From the series ‘Divers Veues de Ports de Mer’, 12 numbered plates after Nicolas Perelle. Published by Nicolaes Visscher II, catalogued in Hollstein under Claes Claesz. Visscher II (H.50-61).

Biography engraver: Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. Son of Nicolaes Visscher I and grandson of Claes Jansz. Visscher. His widow Elisabeth continued the print business after his death.

Biography artist: Nicolas Perelle (1631-1695) was a French painter and engraver, son of Gabriel Perelle and known for views of military and architectural subjects, including scenes celebrating Louis XIV’s conquests.
