‘MORT DE D?ASSAS EN OCTOBRE 1760, PRES DE CLOSTERCAMP, SUR LE BAS RHIN.’

– Night battle scene during the Seven Year war: Chevalier Louis Charles d’Assas, struck by enemy soldiers, collapses while calling out to warn his comrades. Soldiers surge around him with bayonets; smoke and volleys light the wooded battlefield under the moonlight. Attacked by English soldiers during the Battle of Kloster Kampen, during a night reconnaissance, he still manages to warn his compatriots before being killed.

State: Second state (with modified inscription).

Reference: Hennin 8972.

Biography engraver: Pierre Laurent (1739?1809), French engraver, royal engraver to the King and Queen, and member of the Acad?mie de Peinture de Marseille. Best known for historical and commemorative engravings, including heroic scenes of French military history.

Biography artist: Casanova (1727?1805), Venetian-born painter active in France, specialized in battle and historical scenes. His dramatic depictions of war were widely engraved and circulated in the late 18th century.
