Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Double headed eagle.

Sheet size: 43 x 53 cm (16.93 x 20.87 inch). Image size: 37.5 x 44 cm. (14.76 x 17.32 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Light creasing, foxing and soiling. Image fine. Small tear at bottom left, backed. A few thin paper spots and pinsize hole in margin only. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Pieter Franciscus Martenasie (1729-1789), son of Franciscus and Petronella van Neckens, was born in Antwerp in Dec. 1729, went to Paris, where he had J.P. de Bas as his teacher in the treatment of the engraving iron. Returning to Antwerp, he settled there, became professor director of the Academy on February 6, 1762, and ordinary engraver to Prince Charles of Lorraine, governor-general of the Austrian Netherlands, on September 10, 1764. On the 17th of March, 1770, he resigned his position at the Academy, and on the 3rd of October, 1789, he passed away. Among his best engravings was the Sabyn Rape of Virgins after Rubbens and the Father of the House after Greuze. His portrait, painted life-size by Andreas Cornelis Lens, is in the museum in Antwerp.

Biography artist: Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and draughtsman, celebrated for his Italianate landscapes filled with shepherds, cattle, and golden light. He greatly influenced 18th-century French taste.
