Ludolf Backhuysen/Bakhuizen (1631-1708) was a German/Dutch painter, draftsman and etcher from Emden, active in Amsterdam. He was strongly influenced by Willem van de Velde de Jonge. He painted harbour, marine scenes and ships. He is famous for his depictions of stormy seas and shipwrecks. He painted many scenes of Dutch maritime / marine history.
