Description
The Cave of Plato. A cavernous room with two groups of philosophers separated by a wall, atop the wall is a row of figurines including Cupid and Bacchus and a light casts a shadow of them against the wall, the group of men at left standing together debating, the group at right in animated discussion in a darker portion of the space.
Made by (possibly) Joseph Mulder after Jan Saenredam after Cornelis Cornelisz. Van Haarlem.
Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 28.3 x 18.6 cm (11.14 x 7.32 inch). Image size: 26 x 16 cm. (10.24 x 6.3 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Original fold lines as published. Small tear in bottm fold lines, not effecting the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Biography engraver: Joseph Mulder (1658, Amsterdam – 1742, Amsterdam), was a Dutch Golden Age printmaker, known as a “renowned engraver”.
Biography artist: Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam (1565-1607) was a Dutch Northern Mannerist painter, printmaker in engraving, and cartographer, and father of the painter of church interiors, Pieter Jansz Saenredam. He is noted for the many allegorical images he created from classical mythology and the Bible. Hendrik Laurenszoon Spiegel (11 March 1549 – 4 January 1612) was one of the most important writers and thinkers from Amsterdam in the second half of the sixteenth century.
