– Fine engraved portrait of Cardinal Jules Mazarin shown half-length within a decorative oval wreath-like frame tied with ribbons. Mazarin faces slightly toward the viewer and wears clerical dress with a broad collar and skullcap. Beneath the portrait appears a pedestal bearing a Latin inscription praising him as a conqueror of disorder and a pacifier of the world. Jules Mazarin (1602–1661) was an Italian-born cardinal and one of the most powerful statesmen of seventeenth-century France. As chief minister under the young Louis XIV, he guided the monarchy through the turbulent period of the Fronde and strengthened royal authority in France.
