Biography engraver: Philippus Velijn (1787-1836), also known as Philippus Velyn, was a French-Dutch painter, drawer, etcher, and engraver. He was born on January 31, 1787, in Leiden and passed away on May 4, 1836, in Amsterdam. Velijn received his artistic education at the Drawing and Painting Academy ‘Ars Aemuae Natrae’ in Leiden. He was active as an artist in Amsterdam, Leiden, and Paris. His favorite subjects as an artist were battles, Christian religious representations, and portrait presentations. He also designed devotional prints. Velijn was a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam, the Art Promoting Society V.W. in Amsterdam, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work period was between approximately 1793 and 1836. Some of his prints are housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Biography artist: Hendrik Vettewinkel (1809-1878) was a Dutch artist who specialized in painting ships, harbors, and seascapes. He was initially destined to follow his father’s footsteps as a house and ship painter, but chose to become a fine artist instead. His work included various figure and genre pieces before he dedicated himself to marine painting.
