BACKGROUND INFORMATION

State: Early 18th-century impression with royal privilege.

Biography engraver: Gerard Jean Baptiste Scotin I (1671-1716) was a French engraver active in Paris in the early 18th century. He worked on book illustrations and costume series, contributing to the dissemination of images of the Ottoman Empire and the Levant through finely executed engravings.

Biography artist: Jean Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737) was a French painter active in Constantinople (Istanbul), known for his detailed depictions of Ottoman court life and costumes. His works documenting the diverse peoples of the Levant were widely reproduced in engravings, especially in the influential publication Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes nations du Levant (1714-15).
