BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This original antique print was published in London ca. 1760. Artists and Engravers: This plate engraved by C. Corbutt after David Teniers.

Biography engraver: Richard Purcell (1736 – 1766) was a native of Dublin and a pupil of John Brooks. After Brooks went to London in 1746, Purcell remained in Dublin for some time, working for the print-sellers and probably assisting Andrew Miller. Of his work done in Dublin twelve mezzotints are known, most of them signed R. Purcelle. Many of his prints are signed Chas. Corbutt, or C. Corbutt, an alias he adopted to hide his identity on account of his pecuniary embarrassments.

Biography artist: David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp. He was the son of David Teniers the Elder, while his son and grandson also became painters. He was a wildly prolific painter, creating over 900 works. During his life he started the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after having presided over the Antwerp guild of painters.
