Made after: Carl Friedrich Wiebeking. Carl Friedrich Wiebeking, from 1808 Ritter von Wiebeking, (1762-1842) was an influential German architect, water-engineer, surveyer and author, active in large parts of Germany and the Austrian Empire. The wide-ranging professional practice of Carl Friedrich von Wiebeking – encompassing bridge, road and hydraulic engineering. Wiebeking can be seen as one of the earliest representatives of modern engineering on account of his professional activity based on contemporary literature and his own research. His own practice reflects the gradual change in the building industry from an empirical to a scientific basis.

Source: These plates appear to be published in 1840 in a large compilation of Wiebeking’s work and publications. The plan of St. Petersburg was orignally made after 1824 as a proposal for St. Petersburg’s flooding issues. Possibly it was first published in 1833 as part of ‘Mémoire sur les moyens de mettre St. Petersbourg à l’abri des inondations, et sur l’établissement de deux ports sûrs et commodes devant cette capitale de l’empire de Russie: accompagné d’un plan exact de cette cité et de ses environs.’

Condition: Good, given age. Original folding. Light creasing and foxing (particularly on plan St. Petersburg). A few small tears. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
