Description
Map: ‘Typus Orbis Terrarum.’ World map with twin hemispheres after Gerard Mercator’s map with the title at the top and Hondius’ favorite quotation from the psalms at the bottom. The right side is cut short, but appears to be published as such. Rare.
Made by an anonymous engraver after Hondius.
Medium: engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 20.5 x 32 cm (8.07 x 12.6 inch). Image size: 19.5 x 13 cm. (7.68 x 5.12 inch).
Condition: fair, given age. Right side cut short (with loss of image). Left edge uneven. A few vertical creases on the right. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This antique map by J. Hondius after G. Mercator was published in ‘Purchas his Pilgrimage, or Relations of the World and the Religions Observed in all Ages and Places Discovered, from the Creation unto this Present. Contayning a Theologicall and Geographicall Historie of Asia, Africa, and America, with the Ilands Ajiacent.’, by Samuel Purchas, probably fourth edition, published 1626 by William Stansby for Henrie Fetherstone. First published 1613. Rare.

Biography artist: Samuel Purchas (c. 1577 – 1626), was an English cleric who published several volumes of reports by travelers to foreign countries. Jodocus Hondius born 1563 in Ghent (Flanders) and grown up there. He became a globe maker and map engraver. In 1593 set up his business in Amsterdam after he spent some years in London. He was one of the most important engravers of his time and engraved maps for van den Keere, Waghenaer or Speed. Hondius bought the plates of Mercator in 1604, added around 40 maps and published the Atlas first 1606 still under Mercators name. After his death 1612 in Amsterdam, the business was carried out by his sons Jodocus II and Henricus.
