This hand coloured map shows Holland and parts of Utrecht and Zeeland. In the upper right corner a cartouche with the crowned Dutch lion surrounded by putti and mermaids pulling the boat with lion across the sea.

Made by Frederik de Wit after ed. Covens Mortier.

Medium: Engraving with original hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 63.2 x 52.2 cm (24.88 x 20.55 inch). Image size: 55.5 x 45.5 cm. (21.85 x 17.91 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Fold as published. Brownish on the inner edges. Stains in lower right corner and in upper margin. Thinner paper near fold. Remains of paper tape on reverse. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was published by I. Covens & C. Mortier, Amsterdam, ca 1720. The first edition was published between 1666-1667.

Biography engraver: Frederik/Frederick de Wit (Amsterdam 1630-1706), was a famous engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. He acquired many of the printing plates of Blaeu and Janssonius when it came to auction. His maps were very popular because of the quality of the engravings and the beautiful colouring. After his death his work was re-issued by Pieter Mortier and Covens & Mortier.
