Medium: Copper engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 58 x 43 cm (22.83 x 16.93 inch). Image size: 48 x 37 cm. (18.9 x 14.57 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Uncoloured, sharp impression, minimal aging, clean sheet with strong details. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This edition was printed in 1601 by the Plantin Press in Antwerp. Based on Ortelius’ 1592 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas.

Biography engraver: Franciscus Hogenberg (1535-1590) was a Flemish engraver known for his contributions to Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and Braun & Hogenberg’s Civitates Orbis Terrarum.

Biography artist: Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Flemish cartographer and creator of the first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. His work revolutionized map-making in the 16th century.
