BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Produced in Paris, France, 1837. Part of the ‘Les Quatre Partie du Monde’ [The Four Parts of the World].

Biography engraver: Virginie Susanne Chantal (1814?1887) was a French-Dutch lithographer and artist, part of the prominent Chantal family. Likely the daughter of Antoine Jean Louis Chantal (1789?1853), a French-Dutch painter and draughtsman active in Amsterdam, and she was likely the older sister of Elise Marie Louise Chantal (1817-1895), Johannes Franciscus Paul Chantal (1821?1863), and Jean Adelin Louis Chantal (1822?1899), all artists themselves. While less celebrated than her siblings and her father, she contributed to the family’s artistic legacy through her lithographic works, reflecting her technical skill and artistic finesse.

Biography artist: Pierre Louis Grevedon (1776-1860), French portrait artist and lithographer of Romanticism.
