– Romanticized Italian landscape with a stone bridge or culvert in the foreground where women and a child gather to wash clothes. A dog and two figures descend a wooded slope. In the distance, a domed hilltop building overlooks a clustered town, with a large lake and mountain range fading into the horizon. Sepia ink and wash with delicate penwork.

Medium: Pen and wasked ink in sepia and grey on wove (vellin) paper.

Condition: good, given age. Tear lower right and left middle edge. Light age toning. Drawing otherwise well preserved with fine contrast. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Possibly created during his Italian travels post-1821, when Welker moved in circles of the German-Roman artists’ colony.

Reference: Referenced in the Museum Burg Posterstein holdings and 2022 publication ‘Italy, Destination of Desire.’.

Biography artist: Ernst Welker (1784?1857) was a German landscape painter and illustrator known for his idealized depictions of Italy and involvement in the salon culture of the Duchess of Courland. He trained at the Vienna Academy and was active in Germany and Italy.
