Portrait of Gerardus Mercator (Gerard Kremer). The artwork includes a Dutch inscription which translates to “A people that honors its great men, honors itself.” This work honors Gerard Mercator, a notable Flemish cartographer, most famous for creating the 1569 world map based on what became known as the Mercator projection.
