‘SIGNED ON REAR. PR. BARBIERS 1809.’

– Two figures fish by the edge of a moat before a partially ruined castle. The architecture includes both a derelict medieval tower and a more intact Renaissance-style structure. A stone bridge crosses the moat, leading to a figure seated in contemplation. Atmospheric use of grey and brown watercolor washes.

Biography artist: Pieter Pietersz Barbiers (1749?1842) was a Dutch landscape painter and draughtsman from a family of artists. Known for romantic and atmospheric renderings of ruins, forests, and topography. He frequently worked in watercolor and ink.
