Plate: ‘Esquimoos.’ (Eskimo’s.) With canoe. Eskimos (or Esquimaux) or Inuit–Yupik (for Alaska: Inupiat–Yupik) peoples are indigenous peoples who have traditionally inhabited the circumpolar region from eastern Siberia (Russia), across Alaska (United States), Canada, and Greenland. This scarse engraved plate originates from: ‘De mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol beschreven door Martinus Suart, afgebeeld door Jacques Kuyper.’, 1st ed. in 6 parts, published by Johannes Allart, Amsterdam, 1802. This famous anthropological work was ‘the first Dutch treatise on geographical anthropology… Quite a few plates are after the travel accounts of Captain Cook, La Pérouse, Carver, Levaillant, etc…’ (Landwehr).Artists and Engravers: Author: Martinus Stuart (Dutch preacher, historian: 1765-1826).
