Original copperplate engravings and etchings on a verge type hand laid paper with watermark (not visible on every sheet. Nice hand colouring from unknown date. on paper.

Plate: 2 Deel, Plaat XLVI: ”1: Linum quadrifolium – 2: Drosera cistiflora – 3: Visenia umbellata (= Melochia umbellata – Flax – Sundew – Mallow.).” This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: ‘Natuurlyke Historie of Uitvoerige Beschryving der Dieren, Planten en Mineraalen…’ by F. Houttuyn and J. van der Burgh, published in Amsterdam 1761-1785. (Translation: Natural history or extensive desription of animals, plants and minerals …) This is essentially a Dutch version of ‘Linnaeus Systema Naturae’, enlarged, amended and with plates.Artists and Engravers: Author: Maarten Houttuyn (1720-1798) was a Dutch physician in Amsterdam. Carl or Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) (also known as Carl von Linne after his ennoblement) was a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist. He is considered the father of modern Taxonomy and ecology. The engravers of the plates are J.C. Philips and G. Philips.

Condition: Excellent. Small stain in lower margin, not affecting image. Narrow left margin, remargined with contemporary paper and consolidated with archival tape. A bit more browned at the paper edges. Original fold lines as issued. General age-related toning and occasional light stains from handling. Please study image carefully.
