Description

Vortitudo.

Engraving on laid paper. Watermark: Coat of arms with an animal. Ref: Briquet 2141 (1539).
Sheet size: 14.8 x 21.8 cm. Image size: 10.9 x 16.5 cm.

Good 16th. century impression, before the Petri edition, c. 1539 based on watermark. State: First state of 2, B variant. Ref: NH 132.

Made by Lucas van Leyden after own design. Lucas van Leyden (1494 – 1533), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz, a Dutch engraver and painter, born and mainly active in Leiden. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and is generally regarded as one of the finest engravers in the history of art.

Condition: Very good, given age. Ample margins, some thin paper spots in the margins, backed with paper, not effecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
