Habitant des environs de Moscou – Paysan du Gouvernement Twer (Russie.) – Habitants de la Petite Russie – Pretre et Moine Russes – Femme de l’Ukraine. – Five handcoloured prints showing figures in traditional Russian costume. The first shows a man from near Moscow. Next is a peasant from the Twer region. Third are five figures from Little Russia (the part of Ukraine in the Russian empire under the Czars). A priest and monk from the Russian Orthodox faith are also shown. The final print shows a woman from Ukraine.

Handcoloured lithograph, heightened with Arabic gum on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 16,7 x 26,1 cm. (6,6 x 10,3 inch). Image size: 13 x 18 cm. (5,1 x 7,1 inch).

From the Europe volume of “Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde” by Auguste Wahlen. This was published in Paris: Poiree, Pilout, Duterte and Martinon, 1844.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Auguste Wahlen’. Author: Auguste Wahlen. Various artists are responsible for the illustrations, most notably Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert and R. King.

Condition: Good, given age. Faintly browned. A few small stains in the margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
