This series of masterprints was published ca. 1850. The original paintings were made in commission for Theodoor van Snakenburg, to decorate his newly built house. Van Snakenburg’s profession (writing burlesque plays) is reflected in the theatrical aspect of these plates.
Made by ‘Tieleman Cato Bruining’ after ‘Cornelis Troost’. Tieleman Cato Bruining (1807-1877) was a Dutch painter, lithographer and book illustrator. Cornelis Troost (1696-1750) was an 18th century actor and painter from Amsterdam. He is mainly remembered for his works depicting the Amsterdam Theatre, as well as making theatre decorations.
Condition: Very good, given age. Prints have been framed and matted before, resulting in some discolouring of paper, particularly the margins. Images are nice. In three of the prints a small tear in left top corner, not affecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
