Description
A collection of four oval engravings mounted on a green background. Each engraving depicts a cherub in a allegorical setting, rendered with the attention to detail and delicacy typical of the Baroque period’s engraving work.
Starting from the top left, the first engraving shows a sleeping cherub, in a natural setting. They are surrounded by flora, and their pose is relaxed and graceful, sleeping next to their bow and arrow.
Moving to the top right, the second engraving depicts a toddler, who appears to be seated and is holding something in their hand, a piece of fabric. The presence of a billowing fabric suggests a dynamic movement.
In the lower left, the third engraving presents a cjherub seated amidst nature, with their attention directed towards an arrow they are pulling out of their quiver.
The bottom right engraving is distinctly different from the others, featuring a macabre scene with a skeleton lying on its back, holding an hourglass, which is a classic symbol of the passage of time and the inevitability of death. This engraving is captioned “Leben Nebel.”, two words that are semordnilaps of each other, which in German would translate to “Life Fog”, which judging by the symbolism might mean something similar to “Memento Mori.”
Together, these engravings likely form a series that explores various themes of life, abundance, care, and death, emphasizing the transience of life and the natural cycles. The engravings are characteristic of the period’s artistic interest in classical and allegorical subjects, and the craftsmanship reflects a high level of skill in the medium of printmaking.
