Guerrier de l’Ile Solor. Guerrier de l’Ile Sawoe. – Two handcoloured plates, showing warriors from two of the numerous Indonesian islands (Solor, of the Sunda islands, and Savu, of the East Nusa Tenggara). Both native warriors are armed shields. One holds a kris and is decorated wih plants, while the other brandishes a spear.

Handcoloured lithograph, heightened with Arabic gum on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 16,7 x 26,1 cm. (6,6 x 10,3 inch). Image size: 11 x 21 cm. (4,3 x 8,3 inch).

From the Oceania volume of “Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde” by Auguste Wahlen. This was published in Paris: Poiree, Pilout, Duterte and Martinon, 1844.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Auguste Wahlen’. Author: Auguste Wahlen. Various artists are responsible for the illustrations, most notably Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert and R. King.

Condition: Good, given age. Faintly browned, and with some small stains. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
