19 Antique prints, titled: ”Orfevre Grossier, ouvrages.” – Plate 1-19: Complete set of 19 plates on Goldsmithing or silversmithing, the art of making objects by a skilled craftsman called goldsmith or silversmith, tools and workshop. Nineteen plates dealing with making of Jewelry and jewellery, Implementor, rare diamonds, size of the diamonds, tools and techniques. Includes the descriptive text. The first plate shows a workshop at top with several craftsmen working different aspects of the trade. From: ‘The Encyclopedie ou Dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers, par une Societe de Gens de lettres.’ which was published under the direction of Diderot and d’Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772. The impact of this encyclopedia was enormous.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Benard’ after ‘Diderot & d’Alembert’. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a French philosopher, art critic and writer. Jean le Rond d’Alembert (1717-1783) was a French mathematician, mechanician, physicist and philosopher.
Condition: Very good, given age. Creases in left top in margin and print and creases in left lower. Left margin of the sheets uneven, and with tiny binding holes (as issued). Small stain on some plates. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
