Celebrations in the Hotel de Ville square; 8?) illumination of the fa?ade of the bishop’s palace; 9?) offering of the wine of honor to His Majesty by the corps of coopers of Strasbourg, their exercises and games on the terrace of the bishop’s palace; 10?) ring and goose exercises by the boatmen and fishermen of Strasbourg; 11?) sword exercises and dances on the bishop’s terrace by the city’s bakers. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: ‘Representation des fetes donnees par la ville de Strasbourg Pour la Convalescence du Roi; a l’arrivee et pendant le sejour de Sa Majeste en cette Ville.’, Paris, Laurent Aubert (c.1745). This work illustrated Louis XV’s visit to Strasbourg in 1744 and contained 11 large plates and a pedestrian portrait of Louis XV. It is condidered one of the most beautiful books on festivities and the most beautiful book of Strasbourg.

Biography engraver: Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783) was a French engraver and workshop head, known for reproducing major works and training generations of engravers.

Biography artist: Johann/Jean-Martin I Weiss (1711-1751).
