He served as court physician and medical advisor to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach and became widely known for his botanical studies and extensive natural history collections. Trew was closely associated with the celebrated botanical publication Plantae Selectae, which presented finely illustrated plant species and involved several leading artists and engravers of the eighteenth century. A member of numerous learned societies, including the Royal Society in London and academies in Berlin and Florence, Trew played an important role in eighteenth-century scientific networks and botanical scholarship.
