– Allegorical representation of the fire in the Amsterdam Municipal Theatre (Keizersgracht) on 11 May 1772. Father Time draws back a stage curtain revealing the burning theatre. In the centre sits the mourning personification of the Amsterdam Theatre among the ruins, holding the city’s coat of arms and a burned beehive from which the bees have fled. Below is an ornamental cartouche with the title and a quotation from Joost van den Vondel. (Translation: The world is like a stage, everyone play it’s part and gets it’s share.)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Title print for the series’De brand in de Amsterdamse Schouwburg, 1772′, published by Theodorus and Jacobus Adrianus Crajenschot, Amsterdam, 1772.

Biography engraver: Cornelis Bogerts (active mid-18th century) was an Amsterdam printmaker and engraver. He produced topographical and historical prints, often after designs by contemporary artists, and contributed to several print series depicting current events.

Biography artist: J. Wz. Crajenschot (18th century) was an Amsterdam draughtsman and designer, associated with a family of publishers and booksellers. He provided designs for historical and topical prints, including the series on the fire of the Amsterdam Theatre in 1772.
