BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: Gerrit de Veer, Waerachtighe Beschryvinghe van drie seylagien… (Amsterdam, 1598).

Reference: Early editions of De Veer’s voyage account, first published 1598.

Biography artist: Gerrit de Veer (c. 1570-1598) was a Dutch officer and chronicler who participated in Willem Barentsz’s third Arctic expedition. His journal, published in 1598, became one of the most important early accounts of Arctic exploration.
