Below, a tomb-like structure flanked by veiled figures, smoking urns, and music-playing satyrs. Side panels with additional obelisks and caryatids; abundant grotesque scrollwork and theatrical decoration in symmetrical layout.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Augsburg edition, possibly published by Jeremias Wolff, after designs by Jean Berain (le Vieux), circa 1686-1724.

Biography artist: Jean Berain the Elder (1640-1711) was a French ornamental designer and draughtsman at the court of Louis XIV. His elegant grotesques, arabesques and architectural fantasies became highly influential across Europe through engraved suites that were widely copied and reissued.
