BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Frontispiece to William Hamilton’s 1791 volume of vase engravings, ‘Collection of engravings from ancient vases…’ published in Naples in 1791.

Biography engraver: Angelo Clener (fl. 1810-1830) was an 18th-century engraver active in Naples, known for detailed archaeological and classical subject matter, including works for William Hamilton.
Biography artist: Christoph Heinrich Kniep (1755?1825) was a German painter and draughtsman who accompanied Goethe on his Italian journey and created meticulous archaeological illustrations, especially around Naples.
