BACKGROUND INFORMATION
No. 1 from a series of 4 engraved by Philips Galle after Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort, ca. 1557-1570. From the series “The Story of Lot”.

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612) was a Flemish engraver and influential publisher active in Haarlem and later Antwerp. He was a pupil of Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert and worked closely with Hieronymus Cock before establishing his own successful press. Known for publishing prints after Heemskerck, van Blocklandt, Stradanus, and others.
Biography artist: Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort (1533/34-1583) was a Dutch Mannerist painter trained by Frans Floris. Active in Delft and later Utrecht, he produced altarpieces, biblical scenes, and portraits, playing a pivotal role in the development of Northern Mannerism.
